The Internet Plans Delivering the Fastest Speeds for Broadband


The internet providers delivering the fastest broadband speeds to customers have been revealed but higher prices do not always mean the quality of service is superior.



Optus has the highest speeds followed by TPG, Extel, Aussie Broadband, iiNet, Telstra, MyRepublic, Dodo and iPrimus according to a report by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.



The report also revealed that 10 percent of Australian customers did not receive the speeds they had paid for.



Consumers with lower-priced 12Mbps plans were more likely than others to enjoy the fastest download speeds. On average, 90.4 percent of their maximum speed was achieved.

On the other hand, those who had 25 Mbps plans received 88.7 percent.



All plans included, the majority of service providers achieved scores between 84.3 and 86.6 percent however, Optus achieved the highest score, 89.9 per cent.



Dodo/iPrimus saw the largest improvement in the busy hour download speed test reaching 80 percent of maximum plan speeds, up from 76.4 per cent in August 2019.



However, many high speed fibre to the node (FTTN) is considered to be the most reliable NBN connection type – aren’t the performance promised.

The results show that around one quarter of those using FTTN connections that are paying for high-speed 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps plans, didn’t get their full plan speeds, at any point.

Rod Sims, ACCC Chair said that, while speeds have improved generally, he believes that more actions must be taken by NBN Co and retailers service providers to ensure that all consumers have access to their full NBN plans speeds.



Consumers with poor connections are encouraged to get in touch with their RSPs, and ask whether a technician may be able to fix their connection issues.’

These figures are based on speed tests that were conducted in November 2019.
